Course Information
Description	Intended for Non-STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) majors. Topics include introductory treatments of sets and logic, financial mathematics, probability and statistics with appropriate applications. Number sense, proportional reasoning, estimation, technology, and communication should be embedded throughout the course. Additional topics may be covered.
Required Textbooks	Textbook Purchasing Statement: A student attending Lamar State College Port Arthur is not under any obligation to purchase a textbook from the college-affiliated bookstore. The same textbook may also be available from an independent retailer, including an online retailer. Mathematics for the Liberal Arts, by Lumen Learning. The text for this course is provided by Lumen Learning, using open source materials, but you will need an access code to use the online LumenOHM system. Students participating in the Seahawk Book Bundle should already have been provided an access code for course materials. Only students who opted out will be required to purchase an access code separately. This can be done by clicking any of the homework links in the course content and following the instructions. Total out-of-pocket cost of the access code for this course is $25.

Learning Outcomes	Upon successful completion of this course, students will: 1. Apply the language and notation of sets. 2. Determine the validity of an argument or statement and provide mathematical evidence. 3. Solve problems in mathematics of finance. 4. Demonstrate fundamental probability/counting techniques and apply those techniques to solve problems. 5. Interpret and analyze various representations of data. 6. Demonstrate the ability to choose and analyze mathematical models to solve problems from real-world settings, including, but not limited to, personal finance, health literacy, and civic engagement.
Core Objectives	-Communication skills: Students will demonstrate effective written, oral and/or visual communication. -Critical Thinking Skills: Students will engage in creative and/or innovative thinking, and/or inquiry, analysis, evaluation, synthesis of information, organizing concepts and constructing solutions. -Empirical and Quantitative Skills: Students will demonstrate applications of scientific and mathematical concepts.

Course Policies
Instructor Policies	Blackboard: All relevant information about this course will be communicated to you using your LSCPA email and via Blackboard. You should check your email daily, and regularly log in to Blackboard to check for any announcements you may have missed. Students should only use their LSCPA email for this course; any communications from personal email accounts (gmail,yahoo,etc.) may be ignored. Homework: All homework will be done online using Lumen Learning's OHM system, accessed through Blackboard. Lumen OHM is fully integrated into Blackboard, so you do not need to create any new account, but you should log in and get started as soon as possible. All homework assignments will be due the last week of the semester. Your homework average will count as 20% of your final grade. Mid-term Exams: There will be a total of 3 mid-term exams, occurring at regular intervals throughout the semester. Exams will be administered on Lumen OHM, accessed through Blackboard. The dates for the exams are given on the course schedule located on Blackboard. There will be no extensions or make-up exams, for any reason whatsoever. If you are unable to take an exam on the date shown on the schedule, you must let me know beforehand so that we can make other arrangements. Each exam grade will count as 15% of your final grade. Final Exam: There will be a comprehensive final exam at the end of the semester. It will cover material from the entire course and will count as 15% of your final grade. To accommodate for extenuating circumstances leading to missing mid-term exams, I will replace the lowest of your three mid-term exam scores with whatever you make on the final exam, if this helps improve your grade. Quizzes: There will be a quiz available to accompany each module of material. The purpose of these quizzes is to encourage you to stay on pace and to help you focus for the exams. Please make sure you are aware of the due dates, which are posted on the schedule on Blackboard. Since there are no extensions given for late or missed quizzes, I will drop your lowest quiz score at the end of the semester. Your quiz score average will count as 20% of your final grade.
Attendance Policy	Since this is an online course and we will not be meeting in person, the rate and pace of attendance is left somewhat up to the student. It is the sole responsibility of the student to make sure that they are current and up to date in the material and to participate in all posted assignments and activities, and they are expected to do so out of their own desire to learn and succeed. The student's online participation will be observed to an extent, and for any borderline cases of assigning final grades, this record will be taken into consideration.

COVID 19 Information	The Lamar State College Port Arthur (LSCPA) Student Code of Conduct COVID 19 Policy requires students who have been diagnosed with COVID 19 to report their condition directly to their local health department. Students should also contact their course faculty to report their quarantine status. In addition, this policy requires all students to wear face coverings when directly exposed to COVID 19 in compliance with the criteria included in the policy. Facility Policies	No food or tobacco products are allowed in the classroom. Only students enrolled in the course are allowed in the classroom, except by special instructor permission. Use of electronic devices is prohibited.
